Xbox, Capcom, and Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show slate isn't a coincidence of dates - it's release-calendar chess played around the one game nobody wants to launch next to.

Tokyo Game Show 2026 opened September 17, running through September 21. Xbox showed a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign trailer (Mads Mikkelsen teased as a major antagonist), landing October 23 on Xbox, PS5, Switch 2, and PC. Capcom's Spotlight centered Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance (dated 2027, not this fall), Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, Mega Man: Dual Override, and Street Fighter 6. Square Enix let attendees go hands-on with Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Final Fantasy Resonance - Revelation, the closing chapter of the remake trilogy, is dated April 8, 2027.

A packed TGS reads as good news for a release calendar on its face - but the specific dates every major publisher chose this week aren't random, and the pattern says more than any single announcement.

Every one of these dates is scheduling around the same obstacle: GTA 6's looming footprint. Late October, early-to-mid December, nothing crowding the gap everyone assumes GTA 6 will own - that's release-calendar chess, not creative news. It's the exact decision a studio in development eventually has to make about its own launch window: stagger into the gaps the giants leave rather than compete head-on.
