Spotify's Free AI Audiobooks Are Aimed at Amazon's Lock

Spotify now lets any US self-published author make up to five AI-narrated audiobooks free, with no exclusivity. Read the terms, not just the ethics fight.

Spotify has opened its Audiobook Creation Tools beta to every self-published author in the US writing in English (Spotify for Authors). You upload an EPUB, pick an ElevenLabs voice, and approve the result before it goes live. The first five titles are free, and anything made this way is labeled as digitally narrated.

For an indie author, audio has always been the expensive edition - the one you put off.

The reaction has split into two camps: free audiobooks for everyone, or the end of narration as a job. Both have a point, and the narrators' worry is real. It deserves a straight answer, not a shrug.

But read the terms sheet, because it's doing something else. Spotify says no exclusivity: publish, unpublish, and distribute the same file anywhere. Amazon's own AI narration, Virtual Voice, keeps its audiobooks inside Amazon. This is a platform using free tooling to pry authors loose from a competitor's lock, aimed at the one format that kept many of us exclusive.

The label isn't free, and neither is the narrator you didn't hire. Say both, then do the math.
