A Melted 5090 Connector Is a Compute Story in Gaming Clothes

DLSS 5 pushed an RTX 5090 past 600W and melted a connector. The gaming press just met the load profile local-inference users have run for a year.

On September 7 an owner of an MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC reported the first melted 16-pin connector since Nvidia's DLSS 5 neural rendering shipped, after GPU-Z logged sustained board power above 610W on a card that had drawn around 450W before. Separate testing had already found DLSS 5 adds up to 50% power draw - a 5090 Founders Edition went from roughly 465W to a 575W maximum with it on.

One caveat has to travel with this or the item does not run: 613.5W is total board power, which includes the 75W the PCIe slot supplies, so the cable was not necessarily carrying over 600W on its own. It is one user's report, causation is not established, and no vendor has confirmed anything.

Every outlet is covering this as a gaming problem: a game turned a setting on and a plug melted. The connector worries are real and worth taking seriously. But that frame quietly misses who actually lives at sustained 610W, and it is not the person playing NBA 2K27.

Sustained near-rated draw is not a gaming load profile. It is a compute one. Gaming spikes; inference sits. What DLSS 5 actually did was hand the gaming press its first look at a thermal and connector regime that anyone running batched local models has been in for a year with no coverage at all.

And I can say that from the other end of it because I personally run an ASUS brand RTX 5090. I have installed the card, ran the card, uninstalled the card to add a water block to it, and reinstalled with zero problems. I use my card extensively for hours on end. I also use a local LLM to do aid in the work I do within the company. It is nothing for my card to run almost 600 W for hours at a time, and so far I have not seen signs of degradation. I use the factory NVIDIA connector that plugs into three different 8-pin connectors. Each 8-pin connector uses a spot on the PSU as well. I am giving myself THE BEST POSSIBLE CHANCE.

So the honest advice is not avoid DLSS 5. It is that if you are going to hold a 5090 near its rated draw for any reason - a game or a model - the connector is the component you watch. That is worth saying from a year of doing it rather than from a single melted-plug photo.

DLSS 5 did not create this regime. It just showed the gaming world the one local-inference users were already living in.
