OpenAI releases GPT-6 Astra with the promise of more security

OpenAI released their new, extremely powerful, flagship reasoning beast: GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026. Let me give you the highlights:

• Significantly more robust than its predecessors. It uses new robust safety training techniques that help prevent it from jailbreaks over previous models. • Better aligned than previous GPT models. Reports a new suite of alignment evaluations • Significant step up in cyber capabilities and meets OpenAI’s Critical threshold. This means that, with the right tools and access, Astra can find previously unknown security flaws and develop new ways to exploit them across well-protected systems without a person guiding each step. Let’s put some numbers behind these claims of security real quick. On ExploitBench, which evaluates a model’s ability to turn known software vulnerabilities into working exploits, Astra achieved a perfect score of 100%! This is compared to the previous GPT-5.6 achieving a score of 78.5%.

I am noticing that OpenAI is having to put a lot more effort into shackling this beast. We are edging ever so closer to a Sci-Fi reality equal parts exciting as scary. Astra is equipped to use previously unknown vulnerabilities to achieve code execution and develop privilege escalation if allowed to run without safeguards. It’s not necessarily about generating cute cat pictures anymore, it’s about stepping into true machine learning.
